He has led the company’s Sustainability Programs and advocated the company’s clean technology program, which successfully eliminated the majority of pollution from the company’s operations. Other endeavors include working with designers to enhance the sustainability of Knoll products, and developing programs to ensure continuous improvement in environmental, health and safety performance. In addition to the LEED™ project at the Knoll Lubin manufacturing facility in East Greenville which received a Gold rating, he has championed numerous LEED projects for Knoll clients, including the United Nations Department of Protection, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Santa Monica Public Safety and Sarasota County Community Services. Carl E. Smith is the CEO/Executive Director of GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI), an industry independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the development, promotion and certification of buildings for indoor air quality standards products. GEI develops strategic relationships with public interest/health groups, in marketing and general management positions at Steelcase, Inc., the largest office furniture manufacturer in the world. Associations and participants in standards development with Green Seal Environmental Institute measures chemical emissions of products and certifies that that they meet the standards. GEI also assesses the designed construction of new buildings to determine the extent to which the risk of mold has been min GEI educates the public on the importance of indoor air and on strategies that will improve it. Carl represents government authorities, professional and trade organizations, and actively participates in the formulation of policies, standards and programs. In addition, Carl has served as a senior budget analyst on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee and as a staff member for the U.S. House Ways & Means Committee. He has also worked for EDS Corporation and American MedicaInternational. He was awarded undergraduate and graduate degrees in healthcare policy from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Webinar #9: "Accelerating Green Industry and Building Products" Speaker: Jeff Galloway, Director of Carpet Tile Operations, Shaw Industries and Anita Snader, Marketing Manager, Integrated Programs, Armstrong Ceiling Systems Date: October 16 Noon Central Time ![]() ![]() About the Speakers: Jeff Galloway is the Director of Carpet Tile Operations for the Commercial Business Group of Shaw Industries, Inc. Shaw is the largest manufacturer of carpet in the world and is the leader in the residential and commercial segments. Jeff is responsible for business development, product planning, and manufacturing for the $200 million Carpet Tile Division. He has been employed with Shaw for 21 years. After 5 years in Engineering, Jeff spent 15 years as a Plant Manager where he was instrumental in launching and growing Shaw’s carpet tile business unit into the second largest supplier in the industry. Jeff received a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1983. Most of his career has been devoted to the commercial carpet industry. Jeff was involved with the 1999 introduction and commercialization of Ecoworx, the first and only sustainable backing system for carpet tile. He led the conversion from PVC to Thermoplastic technology which ultimately resulted in the total exit of PVC for Shaw’s carpet tile business. Jeff also has experience with sustainable product design, closed loop recycling, zero waste, and green metrics. Anita leads the environmental effort for Armstrong Ceiling Systems from their corporate offices in Lancaster, PA. She brings the Voice of The Customer to the business units relating to sustainability, and works closely with a nationwide network of Armstrong representatives to deliver our environmental message. Anita also partners with environmental thought leaders in many areas to continue to understand the movement of new ideas and trends in this vast area. Armstrong is a founding member and annual sponsor of USGBC. Anita is active in their local Green building chapter, and active on various LEED committees. Armstrong’s campus corporate building served as a pilot for the development of the LEED rating system. Anita heads up the management of Armstrong’s Ceiling Recycling Program, working with carious organizations throughout the US. Armstrong’s program is an industry-first ceiling recycling program that diverts old ceilings form landfills. About the Speaker: A unique combination of professional engineer and professional marketer, Jerry Yudelson is a former board member of the U.S. Green Building Council and serves as a LEED® Faculty member. Since 2001, he has trained nearly 3,000 people in the U.S. LEED green building rating system. Currently, Jerry serves as the Chair of the USGBC’s 2007 Greenbuild international green building conference and expo, the world’s largest, to be held in Chicago in November. She has collaborated on many award-winning LEED projects and most recently lead the effort for the first LEED CI Platinum rated facility in the country, the Interface Showroom and offices. Carlie has written, prepared and presented multiple and various green building topics, including the facilitation of sustainable design (LEED) eco-charettes, and remains current with the industry through her participation and speaking engagements at many green building conferences such as the AIA National Convention, EnvironDesign, ICFF as well as the USGBC International Greenbuild Conference and Expo. He has been involved in all areas of the company, including management of one of the largest dyeing and finishing plants for flat fabrics; leading development and technology groups; managing sales for government, education, and healthcare markets; training a national sales organization on environmental standards--IAQ and LEED; establishing strategic channels for end-of-life carpet management; working with governmental organizations on environmental legislation; developing sustainable standards within the company for products, policy and technology; establishing sustainable standards for the carpet industry through CRI; and completing product Life Cycle Assessment certification. About the Speaker: Greg Norris founded and directs Sylvatica, a life cycle assessment (LCA) research consulting firm in Maine. Norris is Program Manager for the United Nations’ Environment Program’s (UNEP) global Life Cycle Initiative, directing the Program on Life Cycle Inventory Analysis. He teaches graduate courses on LCA and Industrial Ecology at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he also advises graduate students from HSPH and visiting research fellows from abroad. Norris is Manager of the LCA-Into-LEED process for the US Green Building Council. He consults on LCA and sustainable consumption to the UN, to governments in the US and abroad, and to the private and non-profit sectors. Norris is founder and executive director of New Earth, a global network and foundation for community-based sustainable development and continuous environmental and social improvement. Norris also founded and directs the Earthster project that’s an open source information exchange infrastructure to make life cycle opportunities for sustainable development and production globally accessible. Norris is Adjunct Research Professor at the Complex Systems Research Center, University of New Hampshire; he is a Program Associate in the Center for Hazardous Substance Research at Kansas State University; Faculty Associate within the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine; and an editor of the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment and the Journal of Industrial Ecology.
